British national dies by suicide in immigration detention: official
A 53-year-old British national has died by suicide while being held at an immigration detention center in West Java, officials confirmed on Friday.
The individual, identified by the initials DJR, was discovered unconscious in a bathroom at the Depok Immigration Office on Tuesday, April 21.
He had been taken into custody only two days prior, on April 20, pending an inspection regarding his stay permit.
Director General of Immigration, Hendarsam Marantoko, confirmed that both internal investigations and forensic autopsy results point to suicide.
"The current developments indicate that the deceased British citizen did indeed commit suicide inside," Marantoko said during a press briefing in Tangerang.
"We have investigated and conducted an autopsy; it is indeed a case of suicide."
While the specific details of the act were not disclosed, Marantoko suggested that the man might have been struggling with his mental health during his brief time in custody.
"Since he had only been there for two days, there is a possibility of depression," Marantoko noted, contrasting the short stay with longer-term detentions that typically trigger different investigative motives.
According to the Director General, authorities were already in the middle of processing the man's discharge when the tragedy occurred.
"At that time, the process of releasing the foreign national from the detention center was already in progress and had not yet been completed," he said.
The Depok Immigration Office has notified the man’s family in Indonesia.
Officials are now coordinating with his relatives to determine final arrangements.
"We need to determine whether the deceased will be repatriated to his home country or buried here."
