Driver to pay Rp25 million for hitting ex-VP Kalla's home

A 35-year-old driver who crashed into the South Jakarta home of former Indonesian vice president Jusuf Kalla will pay about 25 million rupiah (US$1,600) in damages after reaching a settlement with the family, police said.

South Jakarta Police Spokesperson Adjunct Senior Commissioner Murodih said the estimated repair cost was around 25 million rupiah, based on preliminary assessments of damage to the property.

The driver, identified by initials AP, and representatives of the victim held mediation talks on Wednesday and agreed that the driver would cover repair expenses.

“As a result of the mediation, the driver has agreed to repair the damage,” Murodih told reporters in Jakarta on Thursday.

With a compensation agreement in place, the case was dropped because the victim’s side chose not to file a formal police report, he added.

Police suspect the driver was drowsy when he rammed his Hyundai Santa Fe Jeep into the fence of Kalla’s house in Kebayoran Baru.

The crash occurred at about 3:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, when the vehicle was traveling from the Kemang area.
